Hospital overview

Forté Health, situated in central Christchurch, opened in January 2014 for short stay surgical procedures (day stay and overnight) and provides otorhinolaryngology, gynaecology, urology, orthopaedic, general and maxillofacial surgical specialties.

The hospital consists of patient and surgical facilities comprising four high tech operating theatres, a 12 bed recovery unit and two lounges for day stay, each with seven recovery chairs.

The ward stay suites are located on level one and provide 14 overnight suites. Consulting rooms are located on the ground and first floor, along with a laboratory and radiology department.

The hospital’s challenge

Forté Health is a new hospital designed, developed and financed by 32 surgeons with a vision to provide leading edge technology for short stay surgical procedures.

Their objective was to build a hospital that included reliable Wi-Fi for connecting to clinical information systems, and high definition integrated theatres with training, recording and conferencing functionality.

An additional focus was on streamlining administrative processes to minimise double-handling of information and to ensure a high level of accuracy.

To meet this objective, external service providers were sought for an anaesthesia information management system, a hospital administrative system and a clinician administration system.

Getz Clinical solution

Getz Clinical was awarded the contract to provide the anaesthesia information management system to Forté Health’s new hospital.

Getz Clinical’s solution was selected on its ability to capture accurate data, meet legal reporting requirements, significantly reduce report preparation times for anaesthetists, deliver a paperless solution, and ultimately enhance operating theatre utilisation.

We were also engaged to develop an integration solution using HL7 to interface the Getz Clinical modules with the hospital’s patient administration system and clinical administration system.

Installation included hardware (client touch screen monitors and server infrastructure), professional implementation services, training services, technical support services and configuration.

It was a challenge implementing the modules in a hospital that at the time was being constructed, yet Getz Clinical was ready to go-live well ahead of the contractual implementation date.

Our PreOp, IntraOp and PACU modules were installed with minimal bug fixes and interfaced easily with Forté Health’s patient monitoring equipment and hospital information systems.

Since the implementation the modules have been used to track, monitor and store all attending patient records, ultimately realising Forté Health’s objective of streamlined and paperless administrative processes.

In 2014, Forté Health was awarded a 4 Green Star Custom Design rating by the New Zealand Green Building Council for building design, the first hospital to receive this rating.

The award demonstrates the hospital’s respect for the environment and genuine commitment to sustainability.
