2017 is the Global Year Against Pain After Surgery

Thousands of Australians undergo surgery every year, nearly a quarter of those patients experience long lasting pain symptoms.

Long lasting pain symptoms are still unclear to experts. Professor Stephan Schug from the University of Western Australia is an expert in post-surgical pain management. Professor Schug spoke to ABC news and said risk factors included pre-existing pain and those suffering severe pain in the days after surgery.

Pain awareness advocates across the world are banding together through 2017 under the banner of a Global Year Against Pain After Surgery. More information can be found on the International Associate of the Study of Pain website.
